Just back from a fabulous weekend in the gorgeous Cotswolds, my hubby and I happened to come across a canal with a lock, so took some time out of the car to explore.

Being keen water and wildlife lovers, we happened to pick up a copy of the freebee Towpath Talk, Britain's fastest growing waterways publication.

There we learnt about the new charity, the Canal and River Trust, charged with giving the 10 million people who love waterways a greater role in making them cleaner and more beautiful than ever. Its Patron is the Prince of Wales, and he is about to unveil the charity's first appeal, namely 50 projects acorss the nation that will breathe new life into towpaths and river banks.

The Canal & River Trust has been established to care for 2,000 miles of historic waterways in England and Wales’, holding them in trust for the nation.

It's taken over from British Waterways and The Waterways Trust. It cares for a 200-year-old network of canals and rivers, docks and reservoirs, museums, archives and the country’s third largest collection of protected historic buildings. And clearly, lots of wildlife depend on our waterways, namely canals and rivers, being in good order so that they might thrive and be well.

Crucially, for anyone looking for a gift membership for those who love the water, history and wildlife, then this could be a great gift idea.   You can Become a Friend of the charity from £3 (individual friendship) or £5 (family) a month.

As part of your Friends pack, you’ll receive discounts to museums and attractions, and lots more benefits to help you get even more out of your visits to the waterways.
